Every dog needs to be taken to the veterinarian (the vet) from time to
time. The first visit should be when your puppy is six weeks old and is ready to begin his first series of ‘shots’ . These vaccinations protect him against several diseases including distemper, parvo virus. Both of these diseases are killers, so it important to carry him for all the shots he needs. The vet will tell you to bring him back for the other injections that make up the series. Annual booster shots are also needed. It is important to keep you dog free from ticks and fleas and you vet will advise you which products to use, depending on the dog’s age. Many of these products are easily applied from capsules opened and rubbed into the fur between the shoulder blades. Others may be sprayed on and rubbed into the coat. Ticks can transmit “Tick Fever” to a dog so if she appears listless, lacking appetite and especially if you see a nosebleed she should go to the Vet immediately. Remember, it only takes one infected tick to make her ill. Most important! The above applies to all dogs – those with pedigrees and those without. There is a myth around that “pothounds” do not need the same veterinary care as pedigreed dogs. No true! Your best friend needs his vet, whether his ancestors are recorded on parchment or were just pawprints in sand. |
