Now that you have adopted a dog, you need to think about introducing him to his new home.

How you handle introducing a new dog into your property will depend on whether you already have a dog or not. If this is your sole dog, then you should let him out in the garden to explore his new home. Stay with him and watch him closely to see whether he makes any attempt to escape. Do not leave him alone there until you are sure that he will not try to get out. It may even be necessary to tie him for a few days but no more than that.

If you already have a dog at home, introduce the newcomer carefully. Remember, the dog you already have is likely to regard the newcomer as an intruder on to her territory. If you have a fence between the back yard and the front, put one dog on either side and let them sniff at each other through it. If the dogs show interest rather than hostility, then allow them to meet without any barrier. Each dog should be on a lead and they should be held by two different people so, if any problems arise, they can be separated easily.

The two dogs above are referred to as “he” and “she”. It is usually unwise to try placing two male dogs together. Placing a neutered male and a spayed female together is likely to work well. There can still be personality differences, so introduce them carefully. With a bit of luck the two will become friends and playmates in a very short time.
