From June 1st to November 30th there will be reminders in the media of all the things we should stock to help our human families in the event of a hurricane. So, what about our pets?

Here are the things that should be stocked for your pets: a supply of food in an airtight, waterproof container; drinking water; bowls for food and water; a leash for the dog; a litter box for the cat; animal carriers.

When you put your important documents in plastic, remember to include your pets’ vaccination records and a photo or physical description of your pet. When you secure a supply of your own medicine, make sure you secure theirs too.

Make sure that your dog wears a collar at all times and get that ID tag NOW. Do not wait until the island is under “Hurricane Watch” or “Warning” to start looking for the dog’s collar and tag. In addition to his usual tag, it would be a good idea to put on a temporary tag (a key ring tag will do) showing your family name and additional contacts. Remember, after a hurricane telephone and electricity lines will be down. This will affect both land lines and cellphones, so tags with only telephone numbers on them may not be much help.

Keep your animals with you but do not tether or tie them up, as they will have a better chance if loose.

Most important; when you look out for the safety of your family, look out for your animals. They are family, too.
